[I:http://bluefintunafishing.net/wp-content/uploads/RebeccaMcKeich23.jpg]Those who are active in the of surfing are suddenly changing their wild way of surfing into something a little more passive and relaxing. Just what is paddleboarding? It is the sport of surfing that involves a surfboard as well as a pair of outrigger paddles.

Stand up paddleboarding, also known as , was originally started in the sixties by the Beach Boys of Waikiki. These boys would paddle out on their boards with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. The nick name, Beach Boy Surfing came from this. Also in the early years of , the sport was used as a way for surf instructors to manage their classes for beginner surfers. The view point that gave the instructors was beneficial in watching out for waves that the beginners were not quite ready for.

Here they snapped up photos of the newbies trying out the boards for the first time and later on they sat around laughing over the many spills that the tourists took when they fell off the boards. This became common practice around the beaches of Hawaii, first as the actions of those out to have fun at another ones expense. Later on this was implemented by lookouts who roamed the ocean and warned others of the impending dangerous waves.

To take part in this incredibly fun sport one must stand on a board and row like you would with a canoe. Once a wave comes along they ride it and guide themselves with the paddle. This sport is great form strength training for the entire body. The motion of the paddle is a great upper body workout while the balancing of the paddle board is great lower body training.

All the equipment that was needed was the surfboard and an outrigger paddle. When all one had to do was stand up on the surfboard and use the paddle like you would if you were in a canoe and move yourself through the water.Often when people are just learning this sport they tend to stick to the smaller bodies of water, such as lakes and rivers.

Competition is very fast paced and starting to take the world by storm. Many people think that it is a new sport when in fact, it is not. It is a great way for those who wish to strengthen their whole body. Many people are using Stand Up Paddle Boarding as a way to keep fit and have fun while doing so.

The movement of your body with the paddle strengthens the upper body region. The art of learning how to balance yourself to be able to stand up on the surfboard itself strengthens the lower region, or legs. This is a sport of strength, stamina and endurance and is full of challenges for both the beginner surfers as well as those who are considered to be veterans.

Surfing Is Like Sitting On Top Of The World

One of the most famous regions for cold water (in the ocean, not on a computer) is from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay on the central California coast. Wet suits are advisable since the water temperature averages about 56 degrees. Sometimes the temperature dips much lower, catching less experienced surfers off guard. To master the , it is better to prepare for cold water rather than avoid it altogether.

Some quick research will reveal that there are extras, including hoods, gloves and booties to help keep the head, hands and feet from going numb. Experts say numbing sensations occur in extreme cold because blood flow slows down to the extremities and the body’s priority becomes keeping its core warm. Wet suit hoods can also slow or prevent the loss of much needed body heat.

The best seasons for surfing at Santa Cruz’s great spots like Steamer Lane may be late Fall and Winter. Challenging waves affected by tides and weather add to the ever changing conditions. Steamer Lane is at the northern tip of the Monterey Bay along scenic West Cliff Drive. Veteran surfers ride waves but somehow avoid hitting each other, as the surf pounds against the rocky cliffs. There are roadside parking spaces and rails overlooking the surf for tourists and locals who take pictures and occasionally cheer.

For less competition over waves many surfers prefer sites just up the road near Natural Bridges and beyond. For solitude, it takes just minutes to drive north on Highway 1 to spots where the surf is breaking in less public places. Parked cars along the side of the highway is a sure sign that there is access to a nearby beach.

About ten miles north of Santa Cruz there is a small former whaling village called Davenport where a handful of eateries and small businesses line the right side of Highway 1 (when heading north). Along the left side of Highway 1 there are long stretches of beaches and breaking waves, at times hidden by grassy knolls and sharp cliffs. Patches of crops like Brussels sprouts and strawberries add to the gorgeous scenery.

Continuing along the coast to Half Moon Bay, the site of the annual Mavericks surf contest is just off the shore. The big break is a challenge to cold water surfers who come from all over the work to compete. Waves sometimes reach 50 feet about one-half mile off shore and tantalize the pros but cannot be handled by beginners and most intermediate surfers.

A surfing vacation in central California can be a blast. Maps and accommodations are available on the web and some preparation is encouraged. Beginners should consider registering for one or two surf classes that last one to two hours each. Most teachers provide wet suits and boards. There are many surf schools, camps and instructors, especially near Santa Cruz.

If your hope is to learn to surf, you can find a qualified professional to teach you the basics. A surf school will have you riding the waves quickly and safely.
