The Instant Fisherman is clearly being marketed due to the enormous success of the Ronco Pocket Fisherman back in the late 70′s. For me, that is the product that got all of this As Seen On TV nonsense started. I might be wrong but I believe that was one of the first really successful products to be sold exclusively through television.

Now, of course, the pocket fisherman can be found at a zillion retailers and the fact that it still sells well is indication that people still want this type of item. The pocket fisherman represents a clear upgrade in technology but is it any better than that old Ronco?

The instant fisherman is surprisingly sturdy and I did not expect for it to expand into such a large rod but it is super compact and as the commercial says, it can go anywhere. Now chances are you won’t really need to carry this in your brief case but you could if you wanted to. It can stay in the car or boat and from a practical standpoint this makes the instant fisherman a terrific fishing rod. Traditional rods take up far too much space considering this smaller expandable rod serves the same purpose.

I’m not much into fishing but for the reviews I got this for my 10 year old. It was certainly light enough for any child and she had great command of the reel. I’m not going to say if it is better for catching fish than any other rod because I’ll politely say that sometimes the fisherman is just as important as the equipment.

Our fishing excursion was not one for the record books but we hooked a few tiny little fish and our new little rod was terrific. It was difficult to assess whether or not it was better than the Ronco, but it certainly was easy to cast. Trying to hit certain spots from the dock was far easier with the instant fisherman and the reel mechanisms seemed a lot more precise.

Overall, the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship of the Ronco could not compare, but in fairness I don’t think they’ve made any changes in nearly 30 years. It’s safe to assume that today’s materials are lighter and more durable than those of the past and the added expandability of I.F. makes it seem like a better product.

The fact of the matter is that you can catch fish with either rod but the Instant Fisherman helps you out a little bit more than the Ronco. It may not be as nostalgic but for the price it appears to be a perfect tool for any quick fishing trip. It is certainly worth storing with your gear in case you need a back up during your trip. I’m saying this would ever replace the traditional pole but it sure is a great rod for kids.
